Colour Story - Leaf

Where to start? Well let’s start at the end, this leaf, fallen from a local tree, we pick it up, one of thousands that sit in the gutter or sprinkle the paths. This leaf is part of the circle of life. But Where is the beginning of a circle? There is no beginning and no end. So it doesn’t matter where we start. So let’s start right where we are at, right now.

We are looking at this leaf, it’s fallen from a local tree and we have picked it up and taken a long afternoon to enjoy its colours, soft and bright, pink, green, faint yellow, hints of what used to be a bright green. It’s the most exquisite thing we’ve ever seen. So we’ve taken these gifts of colour and returned to the studio and have been mixing and mixing, boil boil toil and trouble, it’s quiet but for the sound of making colours. And these things take time, a little too warm and we can’t get back to where we were so the tiniest fleck of black might balance it or ruin it for the day. As two artists we have never used a recipe to mix colour, we need skill and intuition and good eyes. It’s back and forth. It’s alchemy.
